Located in Ft. Atkinson, this large deck girder bridge carries the Glacial River Trail over the Rock River.
Built in 1911, the bridge features five main deck girder spans, set onto concrete substructures. This bridge likely replaced an older deck truss span, which utilized a stone arch abutment and approach on the south side.
The girder spans were constructed at unknown locations, and at least one was fabricated in 1899. These spans could have come from almost anywhere.
When the 1911 bridge was constructed, the original approach span, which dated to approximately 1870, was buried. It would be rediscovered when the bridge was converted to trail use. A new concrete span would be constructed to connect the main bridge to the arch, and the stone arch was unearthed.
Today, the bridge carries a trail. As part of the trail conversion, a concrete deck, lights and railings were added to the bridge, in addition to park areas constructed on either end.
Overall, the bridge remains in good condition, and appears to be well used and appreciated.
The author has ranked this bridge as being moderately significant, due to the older arch.
